He lends over 20 years of experience in visual effects and 3D animation in feature films and commercials, combining an engineering and computer science background with a passion for creative problem solving and developing VFX pipeline strategies that focus on efficient workflows.
His broad range of experience spans pipeline optimization for major Hollywood VFX studios and holistic pipeline development from scratch for boutique shops, gleaning expertise in both robust feature pipelines and nimble custom pipelines for shorter-form content.
As an artist and supervisor, notable credits include The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, Daredevil, Red Riding Hood, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief and Happy Feet.
Notes Nico, “As Alkemy X continues to grow its best in class VFX offerings, I’m excited to join its industry-leading team and harness my feature effects background to continuously maximize the efficiency of the studio’s output as the volume and scope of the work coming to Alkemy X continues to explode.”
Adds Alkemy X President & CEO Justin Wineburgh, “Nico has a tremendous wealth of experience creating large-scale pipeline solutions for major studio feature films, while remaining at the forefront of and embracing emerging technology to craft custom pipelines for projects with more unique needs. As we continue to expand our global, award-winning VFX team, we’re thrilled to have someone as accomplished as Nico leading our pipeline team.”
Nico holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Santa Clara University in Engineering Physics, as well as a Master’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Southern California in Computer Science, building on his deep-rooted fascination for computer graphics.
He launched his career at Rhythm & Hues, where he spent 13 years at the Academy Award-winning VFX studio, working his way up from a junior pipeline role to eventually become the Lead Pipeline Technical Director and later Digital Effects Supervisor.
His knack for balancing communication between technical staff, artists, production management and clients to ensure smooth results served as a fruitful foundation for his pipeline leadership roles. Throughout his career, Nico has worked on massive scale, long-term production pipelines, supporting hundreds of artists by developing custom tools and workflows, solving technical issues, and assisting with shots on projects of all sizes.
Nico has also worked as a Supervisor Technical Director at Dreamworks Animation, working on the animated feature Captain Underpants, and most recently was Head of Pipeline at a boutique shop for the last four years prior to joining Alkemy X.
