Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm join Usain Bolt, Abby Wambach in iconic Gatorade reboot, ‘Anything you can do, I can do better’

(Usain Bolt, Abby Wambach)

Sooooo now we’re rebooting spots? Okay then. Back in 1997 at FCB Chicago, creatives Danny Schuman and Joe Burke created an iconic Gatorade spot called, ‘Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better.’ It featured Michael Jordan and Mia Hamm competing against each other in a series of sports. Featuring the song by Irving Berlin from Annie Get Your Gun, the commeeial was an instant hit.

Now 24, years later TBWA\Chiat\Day has rebooted the Gatorade spot and now features soccer star Abby Wambach challenging track legend Usain Bolt.

The 30-second spot, directed by Stink’s Tracktor, highlights the equal capabilities of women and men in sports, focusing on channeling your inner competitor, no matter what you’re doing. It also introduces the brand’s latest innovation: Gatorade Zero with Protein, which has zero sugar, electrolytes for hydration and 10g of protein to help kick-start the recovery process.

After one of the “Yes, I can” lyrics plays, we see Jordan on the phone watching them struggle to skate. We widen to reveal that he is on a golf course with none other than Mia Hamm

Wambach loved being part of this new version, saying the original Gatorade commercial had a real impact on her.

“This was just fun,” she told People. “I was a kid growing up, watching the Michael and Mia commercials being like, ‘Oh, this is’ — it was the first time I had ever seen in my life a woman being seen in the same vein as a man. And I think that for me, gave me permission to believe that I deserved the same thing as men deserved.

So, how does the new Gatorade effort stack up against the original? Is it better? Well, it’s our Reel Ad of the Week so that should say something. In other words, we can love Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and we can also enjoy immensely Tom Holland as the webslinger now.

But there is nothing like the original.
