In a necessary act of creative activism, Grey Mexico has launched Más que palabras (More Than Words), a short film aimed at raising awareness around suicide prevention in Mexico’s LGBTIQ+ community.
Premiering on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Lesbophobia, and Transphobia, the project brings together an unprecedented coalition of NGOs, lawmakers, health organizations, and global partners to confront a heartbreaking and under-discussed crisis.
Produced in partnership with Catatonia, Femess, México Vivo, The Trevor Project, Sico, Gilead, and the Diversity Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, the film is more than a campaign—it’s a collective outcry and a call to action.
“Suicide is a public health issue that we seldom discuss,” said Rodrigo Moheno, President of Femess and Director General of Fundación México Vivo. “Today, we’re giving voice to those most vulnerable due to social discrimination, and connecting them with tools and professionals to prevent loss of life.”
A Stark Reality
According to Mexico’s INEGI (ENDISEG 2021), 28.7% of LGBTIQ+ individuals over the age of 15 have experienced suicidal thoughts or attempts. The most common contributing factors include:
- 57.2% Family and relationship problems
- 20.3% School-related issues
- 19.1% Health problems
- 16.6% Economic difficulties
- 14.0% Issues related to sexual orientation or gender identity
- 7.0% Work-related stress
These numbers underscore the urgent need for safe, affirming environments—and mental health strategies tailored to the needs of queer and trans communities.
A Film to Spark Change
Directed by Gerard Mates, Más que palabras draws from real-life stories to explore the devastating impact of unspoken pain and unheard cries for help. The film doesn’t just illuminate statistics—it humanizes them, creating an emotional bridge between personal struggle and public responsibility.
“We tell this story to denounce, yes,” said Mates. “But also to open the door to empathy and action—for those on the outside to look within, and for those on the inside to know they are not alone.”
Visually intimate and emotionally urgent, the film urges viewers to reflect on the ripple effect of silence, and the role that schools, families, and communities must play in becoming safe havens—free of judgment, full of support. Watch below:
Community-Driven, Globally Backed
The campaign reflects the theme of this year’s international commemoration: “The Power of Communities.” That ethos runs deep in the project’s DNA—from the local advocacy work of Femess and México Vivo to the global suicide prevention expertise of The Trevor Project, which continues to expand its footprint in Latin America.
OUTFRONT Media, e.l.f. Beauty, and other brands have also begun engaging in Pride- and purpose-driven campaigns that echo similar themes of visibility, inclusion, and wellness.
If you or someone you know is in crisis, The Trevor Project provides 24/7 support at thetrevorproject.org. In Mexico, reach out to Fundación México Vivo for access to comprehensive sexual and mental health services.
