Transformers: Rise of the Beasts takes the #1 spot at B.O.

In a head-to-head clash, Paramount’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse engaged in a battle for box office supremacy. Surprisingly, the Autobots and Decepticons emerged victorious, taking the #1 spot at the box office and raking in $60.5 million during its opening weekend.

This latest installment marks the seventh feature film to showcase the beloved characters from Hasbro’s iconic toy franchise.

The journey began on July 3, 2007, when the first Transformers movie graced the silver screen, amassing a noteworthy $70.5 million in its initial three days. Its success only continued to soar, accumulating $319.2 million domestically and an impressive $709.7 million worldwide.

Collectively, the seven movies released so far have garnered a staggering $1.6 billion domestically and a staggering $4.8 billion worldwide, an extraordinary feat amounting to three times the domestic earnings.

Sony’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse secured the #2 spot at the box office by generating an impressive $55.4 million during its second weekend. Despite experiencing a 54% decline from its record-breaking debut, the film maintained strong momentum. It has proven to be a resounding success for Sony, surpassing expectations with a ten-day cumulative total of $225.4 million domestically.

This exceptional performance outshines the previous animated installment, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which achieved a total domestic run of $191.6 million during its 2018/2019 release. The latest Spider-Man installment has surpassed this milestone, positioning itself as a best-case scenario for Sony and demonstrating the enduring popularity of the beloved web-slinger.

Securing the #3 spot at the box office, in its third weekend, Disney’s The Little Mermaid earned $22.8 million, with a decline of 45% from the previous weekend’s earnings. This consistent performance is undoubtedly encouraging for Disney, particularly as it contends with the success of Across The Spider-Verse, which also demonstrated a stronghold in its second week following an impressive opening weekend. Both films, with their PG ratings, target a similar family audience, making the competition even more notable.

Continuing its triumphant journey, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 maintained its success by taking the #4 spot at the box office and accumulating an additional $7.0 million in its sixth weekend, experiencing a modest 34% decline. With a domestic total of $335.4 million and a worldwide tally of $789.1 million, the film has proven to be a lucrative venture for Marvel.

Despite having incurred a production cost of $250 million, each passing week of ticket sales contributes to the movie’s profitability. For the upcoming weeks, GotG VOL. 3 is expected to remain available in over 1000 locations, although it may gradually slip out of the top five rankings at the box office starting from the following weekend.

While its position on the charts may change, the film’s continued presence in theaters will allow it to generate further revenue and solidify its financial success.

Claiming the #5 spot at the box office, Twentieth Century Studios’ The Boogeyman, based on Stephen King‘s chilling tale, earned $6.9 million in its second weekend. The Boogeyman experienced a 44% decline from its opening weekend, proving that this spooky narrative has failed to captivate not only King’s avid fan base but also the broader horror-loving audience.

Universal’s films Fast X and The Super Mario Bros. Movie both dropped less than 50 percent and took the #6 and #7 spots at the box office. About My Father slipped from #7 to #8 in its third week at the box office with a 59% drop while Sony’s The Machine saw a 67% drop and slid down from #8 to #9 in its third week.

Following its promising debut, A24’s Asian-American romantic feature, Past Lives saw a 124% rise and moved up from #12 to the #10 spot in its second week at the box office. The film expanded its release from four theaters in New York and Los Angeles to 26 locations.

This weekend, Past Lives reached audiences in cities such as San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago, Toronto, Boston, and Austin. Despite the increased competition from the additional theaters in New York and Los Angeles, the film continued to perform well, grossing $520,000 and achieving an impressive per-theater average of $20,000.
