Spider-Man webs up #1 spot at the box office

Sony/Columbia’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swung into first place at the box office, raking in a total of $120.5 million during its first three days in theaters. This impressive opening weekend makes it the second biggest debut of the year, falling only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $58.2 million in its first two days after opening on April 5th. The film managed to surpass Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which earned $118.4 million in its opening weekend just last month.

The animated sequel outperformed its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which earned a modest $35.4 million during its opening weekend in December 2018. Across the Spider-Verse surpassed that total by the end of its first full day in theaters, grossing a combined $51 million after Thursday early previews and Friday’s screenings. It is expected that the film will continue to surpass the original’s earnings as its theatrical run progresses.

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar-winning Spider-Verse saga, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters the Spider Society, a team of Spider-People charged with protecting the Multiverse’s very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders and must set out on his own to save those he loves most. Anyone can wear the mask – it’s how you wear it that makes you a hero.

The film is voiced by Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, Jake Johnson, Jason Schwartzman, Issa Rae, Karan Soni, with Daniel Kaluuya, and Oscar Isaac.

Across the Spider-Verse has received positive feedback from both critics and audiences, with Rotten Tomatoes scores of 95% fresh from critics and a 96% audience score. With a relatively modest production budget of $100 million, the film is expected to be highly profitable for all involved. The success of the sequel has already prompted Sony and Marvel to collaborate on a third animated installment titled Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, scheduled for release on March 29, 2024.

In its second weekend at the box office, Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid secured the #2 spot at the box office, earning $40.6 million while experiencing a 58% drop. The film has already surpassed the original animated version’s box office performance, grossing $95.5 million in its first three days and $145.6 million in its first seven days. The 1989 original had a total domestic run of $84.4 million.

The Boogeyman, a film adaptation of a Stephen King story, secured the #3 spot at the box office with a debut weekend gross of $12.3 million. This marks the 45th Stephen King story to be adapted into a feature film, solidifying him as one of the most prolific creators of film storylines in history. King’s works have collectively grossed over $1.7 billion domestically, and his narratives have given rise to iconic movies such as The Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me, Carrie, It and It Chapter Two, The Green Mile, Misery, and The Shining.

The Boogeyman follows high school student Sadie Harper and her younger sister Sawyer who are reeling from the recent death of their mother and aren’t getting much support from their father, Will, a therapist who is dealing with his own pain. When a desperate patient unexpectedly shows up at their home seeking help, he leaves behind a terrifying supernatural entity that preys on families and feeds on the suffering of its victims. The Boogeyman is directed by Rob Savage with a screenplay by Scott Beck & Bryan Woods and Mark Heyman, and stars Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair, Marin Ireland, Madison Hu, LisaGay Hamilton, and David Dastmalchian. The film is produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen, with John H. Starke, Emily Morris, Scott Beck, Bryan Woods, Ryan Cunningham, Adam Kolbrenner, and Robin Meisinger serve as executive producers.

In its fifth weekend, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 maintained its presence at the box office, securing the #4 spot by earning $10.2 million. The film experienced a 51% drop in earnings compared to the previous weekend.

After experiencing another significant decline of 60%, Fast X dropped to 5th place at the box office, earning $9.2 million. The action sequel is showing signs of losing momentum after just three weeks, making it the fastest-falling installment in the franchise’s history.

In an effort to revive profitability, Universal recently announced that the next film in the franchise will be a spin-off centered around the characters from Hobbs and Shaw, bringing back Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

In it’s 9th weekend at the box office The Super Mario Bros. Movie has slipped down from the #4 spot to #6, experiencing a 48% drop and earning $3.4 million at the box office while it’s also available on premium video on demand.

Lionsgate’s About My Father, Sony’s The Machine, A24’s You Hurt My Feelings, and Open Road/Briarcliff’s Kandahar finish up the top ten list in that order in their second weekend at the box office.
