THWAP! Here comes Spider-Man: Miles Morales’

Tomorrow, Insominac Games releases it’s follow-up to its 2018 smash hit Marvel’s Spider-man, entitled Marvel’s Spider-man: Miles Morales. Following the popularity of the film Into the Spider-verse, players will swing through the streets of New York as Miles in the first Spider-Man game not featuring Peter Parker as the playable hero.

Who the Hell is Miles Morales?

Did you not see Into the Spider-verse? The concept of a Black Spider-Man was first discussed a few months before the November 2008 election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Marvel Comics’ then-editor-in-chief Axel Alonso describes the catalyst, “When we were planning ‘Ultimatum,’ we realized that we were standing at the brink of America electing its first African-American President and we acknowledged that maybe it was time to take a good look at one of our icons.”

This new Spider-Man would replace Parker as Spider-Man only in Ultimate Marvel, an imprint whose storyline is set in a universe separate from the mainstream Marvel universe, in which Marvel’s characters were reimagined for a 21st-century audience.

The replacement of Ultimate Peter Parker was considered as a possible part of the 2008–09 “Ultimatum” story arc that restructured much of the Ultimate Marvel universe, but those early thoughts were abandoned because the story for that character had not yet been developed.

When Marvel’s editorial staff decided that the Ultimate universe’s Peter Parker would be killed in the 2011 storyline “Death of Spider-Man,” the character was created.

The Plot

Spider-Man: Miles Morales takes place a year after the original game and will open up during the winter. Game Informer’s cover story also sheds more light on the early portions of the game. Peter Parker and Miles Morales are still dealing with the fallout of the first game, and oversee the transport of Rhino to a more secure prison.

Miles messes up when trying to stabilize Rhino’s containment unit, which is being carried by a helicopter, and Rhino frees himself. This starts the game’s first boss fight, which destroys a Roxxon Corporation factory. After this, Peter tells Miles he is leaving New York, and Miles has to start taking responsibility as New York’s only Spider-Man.

At the same time, a war has also begun between the Roxxon corporation and a criminal enterprise called the Underground. The Underground is an unknown quantity, but their leader, the Tinkerer is a big-time Spider-Man villain.

In the comics, Tinkerer is a genius inventor who bolsters the arsenals of nearly every villain in the web-slinger’s rogue’s gallery. The game’s trailer has suggested that the Tinkerer has been changed to a female. Watch the trailer below:
