The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the #1 movie in America for the 4th week in a row and has earned $40 million this weekend, $490 million overall in America, and $1.022 billion worldwide since its April 5th opening.

The animated film features an origin story for the brothers Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and the Koopas, led by Bowser (Jack Black).

Illumination’s animated film Super Mario Bros has become the 2nd highest grossing picture in Universal’s 111-year history, surpassed only by Jurassic World which earned $652 million domestic in its run beginning on June 10, 2015. Unfortunately for Mario, this will be the last weekend Super Mario Bros will remain #1 at the box office, as we expect Guardians Of The Galaxy Volume 3 which opens Friday (Thursday in some markets) to take over that top spot.

In its second week at the box office Warner Bros.’ Evil Dead Rise finished in second place with a domestic gross of $12.2 million, a drop of 50% from last weekend’s opening. After ten days Evil Dead Rise has earned an impressive $44.4 million overall. The film stars Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland as two estranged sisters trying to survive and save their family from deadites. Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Nell Fisher (in her film debut) appear in supporting roles.

Lionsgate’s Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret opened in 3rd place at the box office with a $6.8M weekend total. A beloved and best-selling classic comes to the big screen with Lionsgate’s adaptation of Judy Blume’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. Starring Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Abby Ryder Fortson as Margaret, this timeless, coming-of-age story has transcended decades and spoken to generations. At 11, Margaret is moving to a new town and beginning to contemplate everything about life, friendship, and adolescence. She relies on her mother (McAdams), who offers loving support but is herself finding her own footing in a new place, and her grandmother Sylvia (Bates), who is coming to terms with finding happiness in the next phase of her life. For all three, questions of identity, one’s place in the world, and what brings meaning to a life will draw them closer together than ever before.

John Wick: Chapter 4 took 4th place by adding $5 million to its box office total, a drop of only 14% from last weekend. John Wick (Keanu Reeves), America’s big-screen assassin refuses to retire, and through six weekends it has now earned a franchise-best $176 million domestic and $377 million worldwide.

Re-releasing classic blockbuster films seems to be the trend these days and to commemorate its 40th anniversary, Twentieth Century Studios has re-released George Lucas’ Return of the Jedi to a very limited number of screens across America. It seems that Star Wars fans are happy to return to theaters to view the film. Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi placed #5 at the box office earning $4.7 million in only 475 theaters. That places the third title in the initial Star Wars trilogy at an adjusted total of around $865 million currently. 1983’s Return of the Jedi introduced fans to Jabba the Hutt, the lovable Ewoks, and one of the most memorable scenes in cinematic history when Darth Vader made the ultimate sacrifice to save his son Luke (Mark Hamill) and the entire galaxy.

At #6, Paramount’s Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves dropped 25%, earning $4.1 million and MGM’s Air dropped 27%, slipping from #5 to #7 and earning $4 million this weekend.

Rounding out the top ten, FDN’s Indian sequel Ponniyin Selvan: Part Two opened in the #8 spot with over $3.6 million in 600 theaters. MGM’s The Covenant dropped a dramatic 43%, slipping down from #3 to #9 in its second week earning $3.6 million this weekend and $12.3 million overall. Sisu, a Finnish World War II film which was picked up by Lionsgate after its Toronto festival showing, did a decent $3.25 million in 1,006 theaters and opened in 10th place at the box office.
