With the DCEU winding down with the release of The Flash next week, Blue Beetle in August and Aquaman: The Lost Kingdom in December, it’s time to start focusing on the reboot otherwise known as the DCU. The film that will kick it all off will be James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy.
According to Deadline, the first round of in-person screen tests for Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane are expected to occur on Father’s Day weekend or the Monday or Tuesday after. Even with a writers’ strike in progress, DC Studios co-heads Peter Safran and James Gunn are attempting to narrow down the candidates in order to meet the July 11, 2025 release date.
So, who’s left standing? Based on this report, our new Superman will be one of the following actors: Nicholas Hoult (Mad Max: Fury Road, The Menu, The Great), David Corenswet (Pearl, The Policitan) or Tom Brittney (Greyhound, Film Stars Don’t Die). Meanwhile, Emma Mackey (Emma, Barbie) Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) are in the running for Lois.
REELated:
Gunn reportedly turned in the first draft of his script before the strike, but that doesn’t mean the production won’t be impacted in the future.
“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world,” said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. “I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
Out of the choices, and being a devout Henry Cavill fan, we have to go with Corenswet. He’s 6’4″, loved him in Pearl and he is from Philly. And Brosnahan was born to play the feisty Lois Lane. Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.
