“SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP met for a full day bargaining session and have concluded. Negotiations will continue on Friday, October 6, with the parties working internally over the weekend, resuming Monday October 9,” said the statement on the actors’ website.

The talks, which mark the second session between the studios, streamers, and the actors’ guild, took place at SAG-AFTRA’s Miracle Mile headquarters in Los Angeles. However, the details surrounding the framework of a potential deal, or any obstacles in its path, remain largely undisclosed at this stage.

Within Hollywood, there is a palpable mixture of panic and exasperation as the industry eagerly awaits the outcome of these negotiations. The recent settlement reached by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in late September has led many industry stakeholders to cautiously adjust their calendars and make preparations for a potential return to work. This includes addressing a backlog of shuttered productions and, crucially, salvaging the film awards season by showcasing star talent.

At the heart of the negotiations, SAG-AFTRA is pressing for a new, favorable three-year contract with the producers. Key focal points include enhanced safeguards for actors against the evolving threat of AI technology and a groundbreaking demand for actors to receive a share of the profits generated from streaming revenue. These demands parallel the successful outcomes achieved by the Writers Guild of America.

Steering the discussions for SAG-AFTRA are Executive Vice President Duncan Crabtree Ireland and Union President and renowned actress Fran Drescher, best known for her role in “The Nanny.” Representing the producers is AMPTP President Carol Lombardini. Notably, top executives from major media companies are also at the negotiation table, including Donna Langley from NBCUniversal, Bob Iger from Disney, Ted Sarandos from Netflix, and David Zaslav from Warner Bros. Discovery.

With writers’ rooms beginning to open, the outcome of these negotiations holds the potential to reshape the entertainment industry’s landscape and determine the future of its talented workforce. Stakeholders will be closely watching as discussions progress in the coming days.
