The tragedy of the indie film Rust has seemed to finally reach its conclusion. The prodution’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, has been found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the tragic accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

However, in a split verdict, a 12-member jury in Santa Fe declined to convict her on evidence tampering charges. The decision was reached after less than three hours of deliberation.

Gutierrez-Reed, a 26-year-old from Arizona, faces a potential sentence of up to three years in prison for her involvement in the death of Hutchins. Following the verdict, she was remanded into custody.

The fatal shooting occurred on October 21, 2021, during the filming of Rust, when a prop firearm handled by Alec Baldwin discharged, resulting in Hutchins’ death and injuring director Joel Souza. Assistant director David Halls had reportedly handed Baldwin the weapon, assuring him it did not contain live ammunition.

Nonetheless, the firearm discharged, leading to the tragic incident. Investigations found five live rounds mixed in with dummy rounds on the set after the shooting, but how live rounds ended up on set remains undisclosed.
