Ranking the Mission Impossible films: From Impossible to Unforgettable

Light the fuse. The Mission Impossible film series has captivated audiences for over two decades with its thrilling action sequences, heart-stopping stunts, sense of humor and the charismatic performance of 61-year-old Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt.

With each installment, the franchise has pushed the boundaries of what is physically possible on-screen while delivering gripping espionage storylines. As we embark on a mission to rank these films, and we choose to, let’s take a closer look at each installment to determine which ones truly rise to the top.

7. Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Coming in at the bottom of our list is the second installment of the series. While director John Woo’s stylish action scenes and slow-motion sequences are visually impressive, the film lacks the substance and intrigue that made its predecessor so successful. The plot feels convoluted, and the exaggerated romantic subplot feels forced. Despite its flaws, Mission: Impossible II still offers some entertaining moments but fails to live up to the franchise’s potential.

6. Mission: Impossible (1996)

The original Mission: Impossible film this somewhat simplistic compared to the other films in the series placing near the bottom of our list. But it does not lack and action and twists. Director Brian De Palma establishes the foundation of the franchise with a thrilling plot, memorable characters, and an iconic theme by composer Lalo Schifrin.

This film sets the stage for the exhilarating missions to come, solidifying its place as a classic in the action genre. It also introduced lovable teddy bear Ving Rhames as Ethan’s loyal partner, friend and conscious Luther Stickell, the only constant in the series besides Cruise.

5. Mission: Impossible III (2006)

In the middle of the pack is J.J. Abrams’ directorial debut in the Mission Impossible franchise. Mission: Impossible III injects a sense of emotional depth by delving into Ethan Hunt’s personal life. The introduction of Philip Seymour Hoffman as the formidable villain Owen Davian adds a layer of intensity to the film.

While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the later entries, it revitalized the series after the disappointment of the second film.
