Progressive is taking an unexpected turn with one of advertising’s most beloved recurring characters. In the latest installment of its long-running Dr. Rick campaign from agency of record Arnold, the self-proclaimed expert on preventing “Parentamorphosis” has a surprising new strategy: stop resisting it.
The new spot, “Let It Out,” finds Dr. Rick leading what resembles a therapy session, encouraging young homeowners to indulge their most parent-like instincts rather than suppress them. The result is a room full of eager participants enthusiastically debating patio stone, listing shades of white paint, and launching into conversations about electric resistance heating.
It’s a fun reversal for a campaign that has spent years helping millennials and Gen Z homeowners avoid becoming their parents.
The new commercial follows two recent additions to the franchise. In “The Plan,” everyday errands become military-style operations complete with meeting points, logistics and overthinking, while “The Waiting Room” captures the familiar parental tendency to overprepare and overanalyze while sitting in a dentist’s office. Progressive’s Monster To-Do List is back
According to Arnold Chief Creative Officer Sean McBride, the creative team had been considering the idea for some time. “‘Let It Out’ is an execution we’ve been flirting with for a while. It’s fun to see the Dr. Rick character pivot and actually encourage parental behaviors for once. After years of chasing prevention, you can imagine him thinking, ‘What if I just let these people act like their parents as much as they want? Surely they have to stop eventually?’ No such luck.”
Together, the three spots demonstrate why the Dr. Rick campaign remains one of advertising’s most durable comedic platforms. Rather than simply repeating familiar jokes, the latest work expands the character’s world while finding fresh ways to satirize the quirks of homeownership and adulthood.
All three commercials are now airing nationally across broadcast television.
