Sony Interactive Entertainment, the maker of PlayStation, announced on Tuesday that it will lay off 900 employees, constituting about 8% of its workforce, according to President and CEO Jim Ryan.

In a news release, Ryan expressed the difficulty of the decision, noting that the restructuring is necessary due to changes in the economic landscape and the evolving nature of product development and distribution in the industry.

The layoffs will impact talented individuals who have contributed to the company’s success, Ryan said in an email to staff members, emphasizing the need for the organization to adapt to the rapidly changing industry.

The US-based studios and groups impacted by a reduction in workforce are:  Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, as well as our Technology, Creative, and Support teams

As part of the restructuring, PlayStation’s London Studio will be shuttered entirely, adding to the impact of the workforce reduction.

Ryan acknowledged the contributions of the affected employees, recognizing their talent and thanking them for their dedication to the company’s success. He emphasized the need for Sony Interactive Entertainment to position itself for the future amidst significant changes in the gaming sector.

The announcement follows similar moves in the video game industry, with companies like Supermassive Games and Microsoft Gaming also implementing layoffs in recent months.

Last year witnessed a tumultuous period for the video game sector, with thousands of job cuts reported as companies adjusted to changing market dynamics following the peak of the pandemic. The industry experienced a surge in demand during lockdowns but has since faced challenges as consumer behaviors evolve.

Despite the layoffs, Sony Interactive Entertainment remains committed to delivering top-notch gaming experiences and meeting the expectations of players and partners. The company aims to emerge from the restructuring as a stronger and more resilient organization, according to a spokesperson.
