It was a night filled with very few surprises as The 30th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards unfolded on Saturday night. In fact, many of the surprises came from the presenters as the casts of The Devil Wears Prada, The Fly, Modern Family and Breaking Bad took the stage to present the actors with The Actor.

Oppenheimer, the film delving into J. Robert Oppenheimer and the atomic bomb’s development, emerged as a major winner, securing the prize for Best Cast along with individual accolades for Cillian Murphy’s lead performance and Robert Downey Jr.‘s supporting role. The drama, which unexpectedly found success at the box office last summer, is now considered a front-runner for the upcoming Academy Awards.

In the television categories, HBO’s Succession was recognized as the Best Ensemble in a Drama Series, while FX’s The Bear earned the Best Comedy Series Ensemble prize for its portrayal of the intense environment of restaurant life.

Surprise wins marked the evening, with Elizabeth Debicki of The Crown capturing the Leading Actress in a Drama Series award for her portrayal of Princess Diana. Pedro Pascal’s performance in The Last of Us also took home a surprise victory, with Pascal himself expressing astonishment during his acceptance speech.

Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri, stars of The Bear, secured awards for Best Actor and Best Leading Actress in a Comedy Series, respectively. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, co-stars of Beef, claimed top acting honors for a TV movie or mini-series.

Winners like Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers) used their platform to reflect on the challenges and rewards of pursuing a career in the arts, emphasizing the importance of empathy and perseverance in their acceptance speeches. “For every actor out there still waiting in the wings for their chance, let me tell you your life can change in a day,” Randolph coached to loud applause, adding, “Keep going.”

Legendary entertainer Barbra Streisand received the SAG Life Achievement Award, reminiscing about her childhood dreams of Hollywood despite initial discouragement from her mother. Streisand’s determination to pursue her passion resonated with the audience, encapsulating the essence of her remarkable career.

The SAG Awards marked a significant shift as they were broadcast live on Netflix for the first time, allowing for more freedom of expression among winners and presenters. This change occurred amidst a turbulent period in Hollywood, marked by labor strife and economic disruption due to the impact of streaming platforms on traditional royalties and compensation models.

Overall, the 30th SAG Awards celebrated outstanding performances while providing a platform for reflection on the evolving landscape of the entertainment industry.
