Nick Reiner seeks access to trust fund to pay legal fees

Nick Reiner, the son of late filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, is seeking access to a trust fund established by his parents as he faces charges in connection with their deaths.

Reiner, 32, has filed a petition in California probate court asking that funds from the trust be released so he can pay for private legal counsel and cover basic needs while incarcerated. He has pleaded not guilty to charges related to the December 2025 deaths of his parents.

According to the petition, Rob and Michele Reiner created separate trusts for each of their three children, Nick, Jake and Romy. The filing states that Nick’s trust was designed to distribute half of its funds to him when he turned 30, with the remaining half to be distributed when he turns 35.

The petition claims Reiner has not received the first distribution despite repeated requests to the trustee. It also states that the trust is believed to contain more than $1.5 million.

“Nick loved his parents, and he is devastated by their deaths,” the petition states. “But the facts about what did and did not happen to them are not at issue in this Trust litigation.”

The filing argues that the distribution is non-discretionary and that the trustee lacks authority to withhold the funds based on concerns about how Reiner intends to use them. The petition also challenges alleged concerns about Reiner’s competency, stating that he has not been declared incompetent by a court or found to lack capacity by two licensed physicians.

Reiner is currently represented by public defender Kimberly Greene. According to the petition, his previous attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew after funds were not made available from the trust or other family trusts. Jackson said in a declaration included with the filing that he remains “committed to representing” Reiner and is “willing to consider reasonable alternatives to the original fee arrangement.”

The petition says the requested funds would also allow Reiner to place money in his jail commissary account for basic support items including socks, soap and other hygiene products. “The stakes for Nick could not be higher,” the filing states.

Rob Reiner, the son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, was one of Hollywood’s most recognizable actor-directors, known for directing films including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally…, Misery and A Few Good Men. Michele Singer Reiner was a photographer and longtime advocate for social and political causes.

Nick Reiner has previously struggled with drug addiction and has spent time in rehabilitation facilities, according to prior reports.
