The 83rd Golden Globe Awards crowned One Battle After Another and Hamnet as the night’s top film winners, splitting the ceremony’s two biggest prizes and setting the tone for an awards season defined by bold auteurs and deeply personal storytelling. Hosted by Nikki Glaser, the Globes aired live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+ from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s One Battle After Another entered the night as the most-nominated film with nine nods and ultimately led the feature winners. Paul Thomas Anderson’s sharp, politically charged action satire won Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), along with awards for Supporting Actress (Teyana Taylor), Screenplay, and Director.

Accepting the directing prize, Anderson used his speech to praise Warner Bros. Discovery film co-chair Mike De Luca, crediting him with long-standing creative support dating back to Boogie Nights. “He wanted to be my champion,” Anderson said, pointing to De Luca’s filmmaker-first philosophy as a driving force behind One Battle After Another and other studio-backed, director-led projects.

Focus Features’ Hamnet claimed Best Motion Picture (Drama), while Jessie Buckley won Best Actress for her performance in the adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. Director Chloé Zhao, previously honored for Nomadland, was nominated in both directing and screenplay categories.

Onstage, Zhao reflected on vulnerability as a creative necessity, echoing the film’s emotional core. Joined by cast members and producer Steven Spielberg, she emphasized the strength found in tenderness, both on-screen and off.

Notably, both Best Picture winners center on parent-child relationships. One Battle After Another follows Leonardo DiCaprio as a reluctant revolutionary forced into action to save his daughter, while Hamnet explores the grief William Shakespeare and his wife endure after their son’s death.

Television categories saw strong showings from HBO’s The Pitt, Apple TV+’s The Studio, and Netflix’s Adolescence. Adolescence led the TV field with four awards, while The Pitt and The Studio each secured Best Series wins alongside acting trophies for Noah Wyle and Seth Rogen.

Additional film winners included Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which took awards for Original Score and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, and Netflix’s animated juggernaut KPop Demon Hunters, which won Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song for “Golden.” Neon’s The Secret Agent earned Best Non-English Language Motion Picture, with Wagner Moura winning Best Actor (Drama).
