Mother’s Day gave the box office a fashionable edge this weekend as The Devil Wears Prada 2 narrowly held off Mortal Kombat II in one of the closest races for the top spot in years. Disney’s sequel pulled in $43 million in its second weekend, edging Warner Bros.’ blood-soaked video game adaptation, which opened to $40 million domestically.
The margin between the two films came down almost entirely to Sunday. While Mortal Kombat II skewed heavily male, Prada 2 surged on Mother’s Day itself, earning $18 million Sunday alone, an 18% jump over Saturday. That late push gave the fashion sequel just enough momentum to secure first place with a razor-thin 51.8% to 48.2% split between the weekend’s top two films.
Together, the two movies powered the overall domestic box office to a massive $162.1 million weekend, nearly doubling last year’s Mother’s Day frame, which topped out at $84 million. The result also marks the third consecutive weekend that 2026 has outperformed 2025 theatrically, continuing the industry’s surprisingly strong rebound momentum.
For Disney, The Devil Wears Prada 2 has rapidly transformed from “risky legacy sequel” into a full-blown phenomenon. After just 10 days, the film has grossed $144.8 million domestically and an eye-popping $433.2 million worldwide, surpassing the original film’s unadjusted global total from 2006. Critics and audiences have embraced the sequel alike, with strong Rotten Tomatoes scores and surprisingly powerful word-of-mouth helping fuel the film into cultural-event territory.
The report notes that the sequel’s success mirrors the long-gap nostalgia strategy that helped propel Top Gun: Maverick into the stratosphere. But unlike Maverick, Prada 2 may face a ticking clock if Disney wants to capitalize on a third film. With Meryl Streep turning 77 next month and reports suggesting the cast remains committed to an “all of us or none of us” approach, Disney may have only a small window to move quickly on a potential trilogy closer.
Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat II delivered a solid launch of its own with a $63 million worldwide debut and significantly stronger audience reaction than the 2021 original. Warner Bros. reportedly spent around $80 million on the sequel, increasing the scale, mythology, and fight choreography while finally centering the actual Mortal Kombat tournament fans felt was missing from the first film.
The biggest addition to the franchise this time around is The Boys’ Karl Urban stepping into the role of Johnny Cage, a casting choice clearly designed to elevate the property beyond niche gamer appeal. Critics remain split on the sequel’s storytelling, but audiences appear fully onboard with its unapologetically ridiculous violence and spectacle. As one critic described it, the film is essentially “delightful nonsense.” Which, to be fair, is exactly what a Mortal Kombat movie should probably aspire to be.
In third place, Michael continued its impressive theatrical run with another $36.5 million domestically, pushing the Michael Jackson biopic to a staggering $577.4 million worldwide after just 17 days. Despite a weak 39% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, audiences have embraced the film with a near-unheard-of 97% audience rating, largely driven by the concert-style spectacle and nostalgic celebration of Jackson’s rise.
Elsewhere, Amazon MGM’s quirky talking-animal mystery The Sheep Detectives opened to $15.9 million with excellent reviews, while Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft – The Tour rounded out the Top Five with $7.5 million. Directed in part by James Cameron, the immersive concert experience earned rave audience scores and positioned itself closer to Beyoncé’s Renaissance film than a traditional backstage documentary.
