Mike Roe Joins Hanson Dodge as Chief Creative Officer

Mike Roe

Hanson Dodge has appointed Mike Roe as its new Chief Creative Officer, succeeding Chris Buhrman, who is retiring at the end of the month after a decade with the agency. Roe joins from Milwaukee-based Hoffman York, where he served as Executive Creative Director.

A highly regarded creative leader with 25 years of experience, Roe’s philosophy is simple: “To make something is to learn something.” His career spans senior creative roles at Energy BBDO, Carmichael Lynch, mcgarrybowen, Razorfish, Gravity Labs, and most recently, Hoffman York. His expertise spans diverse industries, from packaged goods and personal care to tourism, spirits, financial services, pharma, and retail.

Over the years, Roe has worked with an impressive list of clients, including Mars/Wrigley, Henkel, SC Johnson, Jim Beam, Bud Light, LL Bean, USAA, Smuckers, Kleenex, Aldi, Citi, and Oscar Mayer. His work has earned EFFIEs, Cannes Lions, and One Show Pencils, and has been featured in Communication Arts and Luerzer’s Archive.

Stacie Boney, president of Hanson Dodge, expressed her enthusiasm for Roe’s arrival, “I had the pleasure of working closely with Mike for 10 years at Energy BBDO, where he led award-winning campaigns for Wrigley’s 5 and Orbit gums, as well as SC Johnson’s Raid and Ziploc brands. His ability to blend creativity with strategic business results is remarkable. I’ve followed his career closely, and when the opportunity arose to bring in a new creative leader, I knew Mike was the right person to take Hanson Dodge to the next level.”

Boney also emphasized Roe’s alignment with the agency’s values, “Beyond his creative brilliance, Mike is deeply committed to serving clients and fostering a strong team culture. I’m thrilled to reunite with him as we embark on an exciting new chapter for Hanson Dodge.”

A Fond Farewell to Chris Buhrman

Roe steps into the role following Chris Buhrman’s retirement after a distinguished 40-year career, 10 of which were spent at Hanson Dodge. Under Buhrman’s leadership, the agency won its first-ever EFFIE Award for KEEN Utility and launched impactful campaigns for Creminelli Foods, Green Gobbler, NOW, and Healthy MKE. During his tenure, Hanson Dodge was recognized as one of Adweek’s Fastest Growing Agencies and won Ad Age’s Small Agency Silver Award in the Midwest.

Boney praised Buhrman’s contributions, stating, “Chris played a vital role in shaping the agency’s success over the past decade. On behalf of everyone at Hanson Dodge, we are incredibly grateful for his leadership, creativity, and mentorship. We wish him the very best in his well-earned retirement—filled with hiking, biking, and exciting new adventures.”

Looking Ahead

Roe’s arrival comes at a pivotal moment for Hanson Dodge. The agency closed 2024 on a high note, experiencing double-digit revenue growth and securing multiple new clients, including LIXIL North America—the biggest account win in the agency’s history—alongside Ruffwear, JOJO’s Chocolate, Baxter Planning, and Grey/Orange. Additionally, the agency expanded its work with existing clients, including Fireside Market (Potawatomi Ventures) and the Utah Office of Tourism.

Expressing his vision for his new role, Roe shared, “My goal is simple: I want to elevate Hanson Dodge’s creative reputation as the best agency in Milwaukee and beyond, delivering work that surprises, inspires, and builds our clients’ brands in unexpected ways.”

He officially assumes his new role this month.

Reel 360 News wishes Mike the best of luck at Hanson Dodge.
