BETTER Studios is checking Cannes Lions into the end times. The studio has announced the debut of Last Resorts, billed as the world’s first climate apocalypse timeshare, at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The satirical hospitality concept imagines a near future in which climate stability has become a luxury amenity, and survival is repackaged as a premium membership plan.
In the deal of an “end time,” Last Resorts offers bunker living for the rest of us. Tucked 50 feet underground in reinforced steel bunkers, residents can enjoy endless virtual sunsets and all-you-can-eat freeze-dried cuisine, per monthly ration. Fortunately, it is not real. Yet.
Produced by BETTER Studios and directed by Kristyna Archer, the campaign includes a film, an installation, and an immersive experience centered on a fictional hospitality brand for the climate apocalypse. BUTTER Music and Sound set the tone with upbeat shopping network-style tracks, paired with sound design from Eleven Sound, editing by Andrew Ratzlaff at Cabin, VFX from JAMM, and additional AI support from Illumedia Studio. “For years we’ve read about billionaires building bunkers, buying islands, and prepping for an uncertain future,” said Ben Becker, founder of BETTER Studios. “What about everybody else? Last Resorts imagines the moment bunker living goes mass market…with manageable monthly payments.”
The film will premiere at Cannes Lions, followed by a 30-minute presentation from Becker. The activation includes a cabana check-in desk, vacation apparel made from upcycled waste streams, and limited-edition collectibles, including Last Resorts Bingo, described as “the only game where everybody’s guaranteed to lose.”
“Most dystopias are designed to be escaped,” Becker continues. “Last Resorts was designed to be booked. The unsettling part? We didn’t have to look very far past the present to inspire the brochure.”
The campaign arrives amid a growing slate of climate-focused creative work and industry advocacy at Cannes Lions. BETTER Studios is positioning Last Resorts as both satire and warning, using the visual language of vacation marketing to ask what happens when the future is sold back to consumers as an amenity.
The featured speaker session from BETTER Studios will take place at The Terrace on Thursday, June 25, at 2 p.m. CEST.
