This January, Frito-Lay will launch its first-ever “New Year New You” campaign starring not only an array of snacks, but ALSO 80’s chart-topper Rick Astley, who will assure viewers that they “never have to give up” fun, flavorful snacks, including Smartfood popcorn, SunChips, Off the Eaten Path veggie crisps/puffs, and Baked+ Simply favorites to Snack a Little Smarter in 2021.
Recently, Astley took a break from filming his part in the upcoming ad campaign, to sit down with Reel 360 over ZOOM and discuss the Snack a Little Smarter campaign, his recent Christmas song, life during the pandemic, and of course, the global phenomenon we all know and love, commonly referred to as “Rickrolling.”
And if you happen to not know what the term means, here’s a little help – Rickrolling is a prank and an Internet meme involving an unexpected appearance of the music video for his iconic 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up.” The meme is a type of bait and switch using a disguised hyperlink that leads to the music video.
Watch our candid interview with Rick below:
Rick shared that he is thrilled to be a part of this “New Year New You” campaign because he acknowledges how unhealthy excessive snacking can be and feels it’s important to make healthier choices without “giving up” snacking altogether.
We will have to wait until January 2021 to see the campaign in its entirety on on streaming TV, as well as internet radio via Spotify and social media, which will stress TikTok thanks in part to Rick Astley’s popularity on the platform.
