Hugh Jackman slashes his way into Deadpool 3 as Wolverine

Whoa, Bub. Did not see this coming. Today, Ryan Reynolds made the jaw-dropping announcement on Twitter that actor Hugh Jackman will reprise the role of The X-Men’s Logan/Wolverine for Deadpool 3.

The threequel is now officially set to hit theaters on September 6, 2024.

Sitting on a couch in what looks like the set from Risky Business, the always likable Reynolds apologizes for missing D23. He tells the audience that he has been hard at work with coming up with the third film for the “Merc with the Mouth.”

We then follow Reynolds as he strolls through wood and drinking. He tells us that Deadpool 3 has to “feel special.” He then confesses that he has nothing. But pauses, and says, ” Well, we did have one idea…” Watch below:

Director Shawn Levy (The Adam Project, Stranger Things, Free Guy) then responded with his own tweet:

Jackman last played Logan in the acclaimed 2017 film, Logan. He died in the film, thus ending his run as the temperamental mutant. But anything is possible in the MCU multiverse. Earlier this year, we saw Patrick Stewart reprise his Professor X role in Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness.

This casting news also brings Jackman and Reynolds full circle. Reynolds was cast as Deadpool in an ill-conceived version in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds then went on to star in Deadpool which was a major hit for 20th Century Fox. The film achieved both financial and critical success, earning over $782 million against a $58 million budget, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2016 and breaking numerous records

How Jackman factors into Deadpool 3 is anyone’s guess. As meta as Deadpool is we would not be surprised to see the two start in the Fox-verse and rip into the MCU. Reynolds has previously revealed that his original pitch for a third Deadpool film focused on a road trip with Wade and Wolvie, so…

There is also the possibility with the multiverse, that Jackman may be a variant of himself. Logan was supposed to be his swansong.

2024 can’t come soon enough.
