‘Big Bang’s’ Galecki bringing ‘Griswolds’ to HBO Max

CLARK! Hollywood Reporter’s Lesley Goldberg is reporting that crazy vacationing family, The Griswolds, first introduced in National Lampoon’s Vacation, and its subsequent sequels, is coming to HBO Max as a new half hour comedy.

Big Bang Theory and The Conners star Johnny Galecki, who appeared in 1989’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation as son Rusty Griswold, is onboard the new series as an executive producer.

The single-camera sitcom will explore the day-to-day lives of the Griswold family in a present-day Chicago suburb. Spin City and Community vet Tim Hobert will write the pilot.

There are five theatrical films in the Vacation series — including a 2015 reboot starring Ed Helms as an adult Rusty.

There was an earlier attempt to bring the family to TV in 2003. That version focused on Randy Quaid’s character, Cousin Eddie. In 2010, Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo reprised their “Vacation” roles in an ad campaign for HomeAway.com.

The Griswolds is Galecki and Alcide Bava Productions’ latest development deal. He also has comedy Bait and Tackle in the works at CBS and esports half-hour The Squad set up at NBC this season, according to THR.

No word yet on whether or not any members of the film ensemble will make appearances in the HBO series.
