Oscar, Emmy, and BAFTA-winning creative studio Framestore has secured a nomination for Best Visual Effects at the 97th Academy Awards for its outstanding work on Wicked.
The studio’s contribution was spearheaded by Visual Effects Supervisor and Creative Director Jonathan Fawkner, a four-time Oscar nominee. Working closely with the film’s director, director of photography, production designer, and production VFX supervisor, Fawkner and his team enhanced the film’s magical elements. Their work included creating epic environments and seamlessly integrating CG characters such as Doctor Dillamond, voiced by Peter Dinklage. Framestore also provided concept art, previs, and postvis through its Framestore Pre-production Services (FPS).
With headquarters in London and studios spanning Montreal, Melbourne, Mumbai, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, Framestore has built a reputation for merging traditional artistry with cutting-edge technology. Known for iconic creations like Paddington and Rocket Raccoon and groundbreaking visual effects in films such as Gravity, Barbie, and Blade Runner 2049, Framestore continues to redefine cinematic storytelling.
Fiona Walkinshaw, Framestore’s Chief Executive Officer, Film & Episodic, expressed her pride in the team’s achievement, “Having our filmmaking peers and partners recognising the craft, creativity, and innovation of our team like this is an amazing way to start the year. Jonathan and his team really pulled out all the stops when it came to conjuring the magic of Shiz University, so a huge congratulations to every single artist, producer, and technologist who helped breathe life into Wicked and craft the film’s gravity-defying VFX.”
This Oscar nod comes on the heels of a BAFTA nomination for Wicked and three Visual Effects Society Awards for Civil War and Fallout.
Framestore’s recent and upcoming projects include How to Train Your Dragon, Superman, Mickey 17, Gladiator II, Paddington in Peru, F1, Civil War, Fallout, Deadpool & Wolverine, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, The Gorge, and Wicked: For Good.
The 97th Oscars will be broadcast live from the Dolby® Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2, 2025. The ceremony will air on ABC and Hulu and will reach audiences in over 200 territories worldwide.
