Emilia Pérez sets new record for Oscar nominations

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominations for the 97th Oscars today, January 23. Actor-writer-comedians Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang revealed the nominees live from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater through a global broadcast across Oscar.com, Oscars.org, Academy digital platforms, Disney+, Hulu, international satellite feeds, and media outlets.

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez, a Spanish-language, French-made film, dominated the nominations with a leading 13 nods. The film is a major milestone for representation, with Karla Sofía Gascón making history as the first openly trans actor ever nominated for an Oscar, earning a spot in the Best Actress category. Emilia Pérez also secured nominations for best picture, directing, original screenplay, two original songs, and a Supporting Actress nomination for Zoe Saldaña. This is the most nominations for a Foreign Language film in Oscar history.

Following closely behind, The Brutalist and Wicked each garnered 10 nominations. The Brutalist earned key nods for Best Picture, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, Best-Supporting Actor for Guy Pearce, cinematography, and original score. Wicked received significant recognition, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, Costume Design, and Original Score. Cynthia Erivo’s nomination is historic, as she becomes the only Black actress to ever receive two Best Actress nominations.
