Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Brutalist lead Bafta nominees

BAFTA

The nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards are in, and Edward Berger’s Conclave and Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez have emerged as frontrunners, leading the diverse slate of nominees with 12 and 11 nods, respectively. This year’s competition is notable for its unpredictability, with no clear favorites dominating the major categories.

Conclave, a Vatican-set thriller directed by Edward Berger, secured top nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, and Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini. Similarly, Emilia Pérez, Audiard’s Spanish-language musical-thriller about a trans-Mexican cartel boss, earned nominations in key categories including Best Film, Best Director, Leading Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, and Supporting Actress for Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña.

While both films led the longlists heading into the nominations, Emilia Pérez initially held 15 slots to Conclave’s 14, showcasing a tightly matched race for supremacy.

Brady Corbet’s ambitious epic The Brutalist follows with nine nominations, while Anora, Dune: Part Two, and Wicked each received seven. A Complete Unknown and the Irish-language indie comedy-biopic Kneecap rounded out the lineup with six nominations each.

One of the year’s biggest surprises is the omission of Wicked from the Best Film category, despite receiving seven nominations overall, including nods for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. The Best Film contenders now include Conclave, Emilia Pérez, Anora, The Brutalist, and A Complete Unknown. The absence of Wicked in this category is expected to cause a ripple of debate among awards season enthusiasts.

Notable omissions include Denzel Washington for his role in Gladiator 2, continuing BAFTA’s trend of overlooking the iconic actor. Nicole Kidman was also left out for her performance in Babygirl, as was Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and his other film Queer, starring Daniel Craig in his first major post-Bond role.

Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine as Light also missed a directing nod, leaving Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) as the sole female director nominated this year.

Among the surprises was Jeremy Strong’s nomination for his supporting role in The Apprentice, Ali Abbasi’s biopic of Donald Trump, where he’ll face off against Kieran Culkin, his on-screen sibling from Succession. Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap earned an impressive six nominations, a remarkable feat for the Sundance-premiered indie film.

The nominations come at a time of hardship for many in the film industry due to the ongoing wildfires in California. BAFTA Film Chair Sara Putt extended the British Academy’s sympathies to those affected, noting the region’s “dreadful, dreadful time.” While no changes to the voting schedule have been announced, BAFTA assured participants that those unable to vote in earlier rounds would still be eligible to participate in the final decision-making.
