Everything, Everywhere dominates Spirit Awards

Once again it was Everything, Everywhere All at Once dominating an awards show. This time, the unstoppable winning film from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert made a stop on the way to the Oscars at The 2023 Independent Spirit Awards.

The film which had 8 nominations, took home 7 including Best Feature. Close behind were Todd Field’s Tár, which had seven nominations but only won for Best Cinematography and Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun won for best first feature).

This year’s ceremony which took place in Santa Monica was highlighted by gender-neutral categories, meaning Michelle Yeoh faced off against Paul Mescal in the Lead Performance race and Jamie Lee Curtis did not take home another prize because Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Performance.

Did it work? Whatever. As inclusive as the Spirit Awards tried to make it feel, having gender-neutral roles really means either a man or a woman will not take home the prize. It felt like someone was cheated out of a win.

The Bear also continued to roar this Awards season taking home two awards including Ayo Edibiri for Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series and Best New Scripted Series.

With the Oscars next weekend, it really seems like Everything, Everywhere All at Once will dominate. Don’t miss our Oscar preview next Friday and check out the Spirit Award winners below:
