Emmys: White Lotus, Ted Lasso dominate, Squid Game surprises

The Television Academy celebrated the 74th Emmy Awards, in a tight three-hour presentation on NBC and Peacock.

During the Kenan Thompson-hosted ceremony, Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso won best comedy series for the second year in a row, as well as a swearing Brett Goldstein, winning Outstanding Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Mike White’s The White Lotus took home several wins for HBO Max winning top limited series. HBO’s Succession grabbed the highest honor of the night with outstanding drama series.

Earlier in the show, Netflix’s Squid Game star made history as Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian actor to ever win lead actor in a drama. He is also the fourth Asian person ever to win an acting Emmy.

HBO’s Euphoria star Zendaya became the first Black woman to win lead actress in a drama, and the youngest two-time winner of any Emmy in history. She beat out heavy hitters Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Laura Linney (Ozark), Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets), Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show).

What was Jimmy Kimmel Thinking?

It wasn’t on the level of the infamous Oscar slap but the Emmy’s did have an odd moment when presenter Will Arnett dragged Jimmy Kimmel Live! host Jimmy Kimmel by his feet onto the stage as part of a skit before announcing the winner for Best Writing in a Comedy Series at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.

“Jimmy couldn’t be here tonight,” Arnett, joked to the audience, noting his “passed out” co-host lying on the floor. He quipped that Kimmel had gotten into the skinny margaritas after losing the Emmy for his late-night series for the 13th time in a row.

Things turned to disrespectful after Arnett announced Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson had won the Emmy. Kimmel shockingly remained on his back in front of the microphone for the duration, forcing Brunson to step over her. Brunson tried to play it off, but the move was disrespectful. Watch below:

Backstage, Brunson said Kimmel’s prank “didn’t bother me that much,” adding that Kimmel was an early supporter of her and Abbott Elementary. “Tomorrow maybe I’ll be mad at him. I’m going to be on his show on Wednesday, so I might punch him in the face,” Brunson joked.

John Legend

John Legend is making a career off of performing in Memoriam segments on awards shows. The EGOT winner performed the heartfelt Pieces off his new album LEGEND for the “In Memoriam” segment of the show.

Black-ish star Anthony Anderson introduced the emotional moment with a touching speech, sharing, “It never feels like the right time to say goodbye to a loved one, a friend or a cherished icon. To quote Shakespeare, ‘All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players. They have their exits and their entrances and one man, in his time, plays many parts.'”

“As we acknowledge the legends within our industry who have passed on, we celebrate all that they created and shared with the world. May they all rest in peace and power,” Anderson continued, before introducing John Legend.

The segment featured moving tributes to Betty White, Vin Scully, Bob Saget, Nichelle Nichols, James Caan, Louie Anderson, Anne Heche, Ray Liotta, Sidney Poitier and more.

Weirdly, the camera stayed more on Legend than the industry legends who passed away.

Selma Blair Standing Ovation

Actress Selma Blair, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2018 and shared her medical journey in the documentary film Introducing, Selma Blair, received a standing ovation after making a surprise appearance at Monday’s Emmy Awards to present the night’s final award.

“I am so, so honored. Thank you,” she said as she received a standing ovation. “I am honored to be here this evening to present the final award for outstanding drama series.”

After thanking the audience at the Emmy Awards, she announced Succession as the winner of the top drama series.

Better Call Saul Snub and Hope

During its six-season run, Better Call Saul has received 46 nominations and has never won. Not one Emmy. While it seems like all hope is lost for the series as the show, Rhea Seehorn (first nomination) and Bob Odenkirk were all forgotten, there is hope. Saul’s final run was broken into two parts. The six episodes that aired in the summer, including those with guest appearances by Carol Burnett, will be eligible in 2023.

That includes all categories, so there is still some for Rhea Seehorn, Bob Odenkirk, Peter Gould and company to get at least one swan-song salute.
