Doh! Mattel issues apology for Wicked porn mistake

Wicked Mattel

Mattel is anything but Popular right now. The global toymaker has issued an apology for a packaging error on its new Wicked doll line that mistakenly directed consumers to a pornographic website.

The dolls, part of a collaboration for the Wicked movie set to release on November 22, were intended to link to WickedMovie.com for booking details and film information. However, the packaging misprint listed Wicked.com, an adult site, instead. Mattel has issued a recall.

The mistake was first spotted by social media users. Notably, this incident follows Mattel’s recent adoption of AI in Barbie packaging design. However, a Mattel representative confirmed that AI was not involved in the packaging for the Wicked dolls.

In a statement, Mattel expressed regret over the Wicked error and advised parents to discard or cover the incorrect URL on the packaging. “Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information,” the company stated. Mattel also assured that it is taking “immediate action” to address the issue.

Major retailers including Target, Walmart, Macy’s, and Best Buy have removed the dolls from their shelves. Meanwhile, Dads have been seen buying them up.
