The Darnell Works Agency (DWA) released Issue 5 of The Shot Chart (The Best of Universal Positive) in August, using the latest edition to examine the creative industry’s shift from pre-AI instincts toward increasingly augmented communications practices.

Titled “Transitions,” the new issue looks at how decades of human-led creative experience are intersecting with emerging AI tools now reshaping strategic communications, marketing and the broader creative business.

For more than three decades, DWA principal Roger Darnell has worked with business leaders and creative companies across account management, planning, writing, media relations, measurement and reporting – disciplines he says remain central even as the tools surrounding them change.

“Working for other maverick media firms and my own agency for three decades, I have consistently helped shape amazingly impactful business stories,” Darnell said.

“This particular moment marks a shift: decades of pre-AI creative instincts are meeting tools that extend them in fascinating ways. While my expertise was forged in a pre-AI world, I am increasingly working in one that is augmented.”

Darnell said the new issue explores both sides of that transition: what remains essential from traditional communications practice and what is beginning to evolve.

Issue 5 features current DWA clients Cutters Studios, Fivestone Studios and Hyperquake, alongside a broader collection of creative collaborators the agency has worked with since launching in Los Angeles in 2000.

The edition also reflects DWA’s ongoing experimentation with emerging AI technologies, which the agency says are becoming increasingly relevant to its work across the global creative industry.

Rather than positioning those tools as replacements for established creative and strategic expertise, DWA is approaching them as an extension of the agency’s existing practices — reinforcing the role of human judgment, adaptability and communications fundamentals.

The Shot Chart is published under DWA’s editorial banner Universal Positive, which focuses on insights and ideas drawn from the agency’s work and industry relationships.

Each edition serves as both a retrospective and a record of DWA’s evolving approach to strategic communications, highlighting collaborators, projects and broader changes affecting the creative business.

With “Transitions,” the agency turns that lens toward one of the biggest changes facing the industry now: how to carry decades of creative experience forward while learning to work with an entirely new generation of tools.
