15th Hollywood Brazilian Film Festival to open with “Pictures of Ghosts”

The 15th edition of the Hollywood Brazilian Film Festival is scheduled to run from November 6 to November 11, 2023, in Los Angeles.

The festival will open with the screening of Pictures of Ghosts, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. This film is Brazil’s official submission for Best International Feature at the upcoming Oscars. The opening night screening will be held at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

Talize Sayegh, the festival’s founder and executive director, expressed her enthusiasm for presenting a thoughtfully curated lineup of films and highlighted the festival’s commitment to showcasing the exceptional talent of Brazilian filmmakers, providing an authentic glimpse into Brazilian life through cinema.

The festival’s program for the year was carefully curated by Thiago Macêdo Correia, a producer known for award-winning works and one of the founders of the Brazilian production company Filmes de Plástico. The program is designed to represent the richness and diversity of Brazilian culture through cinema.

The festival will feature films like O Estranho by Flora Dias and Juruna Mallon and Propriedade by Daniel Bandeira, both selected by Berlinale; Estranho Caminho by Guto Parente, which won awards at Tribeca and Rio Festival; and Saudade Fez Morada Aqui Dentro by Haroldo Borges, an award-winning film at the Rio Festival. Additional films for the festival are expected to be announced soon.

On November 10, the festival will host “For Your Consideration: Brazil Night,” a special evening dedicated to Brazilian films eligible for consideration for the Oscars® shortlist. During this event, Davi Kopenawa, a spokesperson for the Yanomami people and Brazil’s greatest shaman will provide remarks. The festival will also screen the documentary Mãri Hi – The Tree of Dreams, directed by Yanomami filmmaker Morzaniel Ɨramari, which is based on Kopenawa’s book The Falling Sky. Additionally, the festival will feature the feature-length documentary Incompatible with Life, directed by Eliza Capai, and the live-action short Big Bang by Carlos Segundo. This event will take place at the Linwood Dunn Theater located at the Pickford Center.

The Closing Ceremony will include the screening of Tudo o Que Você Podia Ser, directed by Ricardo Alves Jr., which won the Jury Special Award at the Rio Film Festival and the Best Director award at the Mostra Novos Rumos.

The festival will also launch the “HBRFF Diversity & Inclusion Initiative” program in collaboration with SPCINE, a state company affiliated with the City of São Paulo’s Department of Culture. This initiative aims to promote the audiovisual sector and will bring seven indigenous, Black, and/or LGBTQIA+ filmmakers to the festival, providing them with mentorship from local film industry professionals.

The partnership is intended to support and provide a platform for Afro-Brazilian filmmakers in Hollywood. Tickets for the festival are now on sale.
