After the fifth day of negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and major studios, and streaming platforms, came to a grinding halt yesterday, quiet alarms are going off in Hollywood as chances of resurrecting the TV season and resuming productions on films for 2024 are looking slimmer.
Donna Langley, Chief Content Officer of NBCUniversal and was in attendance during those talks, has now expressed her concerns. Langley warned that the strike could lead to a lack of movie releases during the summer of 2024, which could have a “lasting impact” on the industry.
Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles, Langley emphasized her commitment to bringing a resolution to the strike. She stated that films affected by the strike need to be completed by a certain timeframe for the next summer season, and the absence of a significant volume of films during that period could disrupt the movie-going cadence.
She drew parallels to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry and highlighted the importance of maintaining a consistent flow of movie releases for its recovery.
While the strike has entered its third month, Langley did not provide specific details about ongoing negotiations with SAG-AFTRA but reiterated her company’s dedication to reaching a fair deal. She emphasized the need for resolution and getting the industry back on its feet.
The comments from Langley followed a discussion with Endeavor and TKO CEO Ari Emanuel, who expressed his hope that all parties involved would lock themselves in a room until an agreement is reached.
REELated:
Langley took on the role of Chief Content Officer for NBCUniversal, overseeing content across all of the conglomerate’s TV and film studios. Her promotion occurred in July as part of a restructuring that elevated her from her previous position as Universal Film Entertainment Group Chairman. This restructuring also led to the promotion of Mark Lazarus to NBCUniversal Media Group Chairman.
While a new contract between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the studios was ratified, the SAG-AFTRA strike continues.
