Widow’s Bay had a strong start at Monday night’s Emmy Awards, with Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root taking home the supporting comedy acting prizes.
O’Flynn won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance as Patricia Moyer, beating a field that included co-star Dale Dickey, Hacks stars Hannah Einbinder and Megan Stalter, Janelle James of Abbott Elementary, Michelle Pfeiffer of Margo’s Got Money Troubles and Jessica Williams of Shrinking.
The 40-year-old actress called Patricia “the role of a lifetime” and thanked the cast and crew of Widow’s Bay, along with creators Katie Dippold and Hiro Murai.
Thank you so much. Oh, wow. Gosh. I want to thank our mayor and all the residents of Widow’s Bay in front and behind the camera. You’re amazing. This is the role of a lifetime. Thank you, Katie and Hiro, for trusting this Lancashire lass to play a sassy broad like Patricia. And Apple for saying yes. Thank you, Nikki and Tony, for looking after me.”
She also thanked her husband and daughter before ending with a nod to the show:
“My friends and family back home, mom and dad, and the loves of my life, my darling husband and our darling daughter, another sassy broad in the making. But this is for all the Patricia’s out there. See you at sunset cocktails to celebrate. Thank you.”
Later in the ceremony, Root won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for his work on the Apple TV series, becoming the oldest winner in the category at age 74.

Root beat Colman Domingo (The Four Seasons), Paul W. Downs (Hacks), Harrison Ford (Shrinking), Nick Offerman (Margo’s Got Money Troubles), Michael Urie (Shrinking) and Tyler James Williams (Abbott Elementary).
“Holy cow, the money store. I’m thrilled and delighted,” Root said, crediting Dippold and Murai for bringing him into the series.
He also singled out co-stars Matthew Rhys and O’Flynn, calling their comic work.
The reason I’m up here is Katie Dippold. Katie Dippold. And Katie Dippold and the brilliant hero Mariah who shepherded us through 10 amazing shows, but I have to say it is Matthew Rhys and the brilliant Kate O’Flynn, and the comic stylings of these two are the best thing in the 21st century. I was so happy to be included in this incredible journey that we had today. Thank you all the nominees. You are all unbelievable. I’m a huge fan.”
Root then got one of the night’s warmer laughs by thanking Ford.
“Thank you, sir, for all your many years of great, great, great, great, great acting. Thank you, everybody on Widow’s Bay. We are so thrilled that we’re being represented by so many people. Thank you so, so much. And apparently, sunset cocktails are now officially mandatory.”
