Mariska Hargitay opened the 2026 Emmy Awards with exactly the kind of self-awareness you’d expect from someone who has spent nearly three decades playing Olivia Benson.
Hosting the ceremony Monday night from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, Hargitay used her opening monologue to poke fun at her own longevity on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which she has starred in since 1999.
“The Emmys are celebrating their 78th year and NBC is celebrating its 100th year,” Hargitay joked. “And I have been on Law & Order for all of them.”
The 62-year-old actress also leaned into the significance of being the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years. “I’m so incredibly proud to be the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years,” she said. “Imagine that! For 15 years Amy [Poehler] and Tina [Fey] said no.”
Hargitay then turned her attention to the room, joking that the familiar faces were comforting only because she had arrested so many of them on SVU.
“You guys have done unspeakable things,” she quipped, singling out Martin Short. “You should be ashamed, my friend.” Watch below:

The monologue also took aim at Hargitay’s apparently endless run on SVU.
While introducing shows that had reached their finales, she pretended not to know how to pronounce the word.
“Fee-na-lay? Fin-a-lay? Finale?” she asked.
Then came the punchline:
“I’m sorry guys, it’s just that I’ve never had one!”
Hargitay eventually shifted into a more sincere reflection on television and storytelling, telling the room she was grateful to be surrounded by people who have dedicated their lives to creating stories.
But sincerity only lasted so long.
She launched into a parody of Nicole Kidman’s famous AMC theater ad, prompting Kidman herself to interrupt from the audience.
“Now, Mariska, come on. That’s mine,” Kidman shouted. “That is my line.”
Hargitay fired back:
“Zip it, movie lady! It’s TV’s turn tonight!”
Before the live monologue, the show opened with a pre-recorded sketch featuring Hargitay preparing for the ceremony alongside Jalen Brunson, Jean Smart, and Jennifer Coolidge.
It was a fitting start for a host who knows exactly where the joke is.
After 27 seasons of Olivia Benson, Hargitay may not know what a series finale feels like.
But she definitely knows how to open an awards show.
