West Kentucky Film Commission debuts at AFM

The West Kentucky Film Commission is making its official debut at the American Film Market (AFM) this week, signaling that Western Kentucky is officially open for production. With a 30–35% cash rebate, cost-efficient, high-value filmmaking, and a state-of-the-art 60,000-square-foot sound stage, the region is positioning itself as one of America’s most exciting new film destinations.

Representing a growing alliance of counties under the Kentucky Entertainment Incentive (KEI) — one of the most competitive programs in the nation — the West Kentucky Film Commission offers filmmakers a streamlined path from development to post, providing up to 35% back on qualified Kentucky expenditures along with full-service production support.

At the center of the region’s expanding infrastructure is Kentucky Sound Stage, a cutting-edge, 60,000-square-foot facility designed for both traditional and LED volume production. Complete with soundproof stages, production offices, post suites, and on-site equipment rentals, the complex delivers a turnkey experience typically reserved for major studio zones.

“West Kentucky is one of the best-kept secrets in the film industry,” said Kristi Kilday, Co-Commissioner of the West Kentucky Film Commission. “We have everything filmmakers need — incredible locations, strong community partnerships, and a cash incentive that empowers productions of any size to do more for less.”

Co-Commissioner Jeremy Winton, who also serves on the Kentucky Film Council, added, “Kentucky isn’t just film-friendly — it’s film-ready. Between our 60,000-square-foot sound stage and the 35% cash rebate, we’re offering producers a low-cost, high-value environment that rivals anywhere in the country. We’re ready for everything from features and streaming series to commercials and branded content.”

Recent productions, including Gus Van Sant’s Dead Man Wire, shot in Western Kentucky, have already achieved worldwide distribution, underscoring the region’s ability to deliver cinematic quality while maximizing budgets. The Commission provides producers a one-stop resource for locations, permits, crew coordination, and incentives — ensuring a smooth experience from concept to wrap.

With its diverse visual landscape — rolling farmland, small-town Americana, modern industrial backdrops, scenic riverfront skylines, and urban cityscapes — Western Kentucky can convincingly double for multiple regions. Combined with strong local infrastructure and a passionate creative community, productions can stay efficient, flexible, and fully incentivized.

“We’re not trying to replicate Hollywood,” Kilday said. “We’re building something new — a sustainable film economy where creative talent, local business, and community all grow together.”

The West Kentucky Film Commission’s debut at AFM marks a defining moment for Kentucky’s entertainment industry, one founded on collaboration, opportunity, and a bold vision to bring Hollywood to the Heartland.

The American Film Market will run from November 11 – 16. Stay with Reel 360 News for updates.
