Vanderpump Rules stars make up over e.l.f. Cosmetics

In the wake of the epic relationship meltdown between Ariana Madix and Tom Sandoval, famously dubbed the “Scandoval,” on Bravo’s reality show Vanderpump Rules, it appears that the drama among the cast members is far from over. However, Oakland-based, e.l.f. Cosmetics has taken an interesting approach to address these conflicts.

e.l.f. Cosmetics has reunited two of the show’s stars, Katie Maloney and Scheana Shay, in the second episode of their Make Up Over Makeup series, created in collaboration with Brooklyn-based Madwell advertising agency. While the pair may not be at their lowest point anymore, the aftermath of the last Vanderpump season provides them with plenty to discuss. The twist? They are applying e.l.f. products to each other as they talk it out.

As the two discuss their issues, we see The Make Up Over Makeup series providing an intimate platform for open and honest conversations. The act of applying makeup to someone else is inherently disarming, which sets the stage for candid discussions. According to Madwell’s chief creative officer, Chris Sojka, their role in this series is to capture and document the experience without adding unnecessary drama. Watch the 14:39 minute video below:

The first episode of the series featured famous exes Chris Olsen and Ian Paget, and it set the tone for heartfelt and truthful conversations. e.l.f. Cosmetics is committed to viewing makeup as a tool for self-expression and empowerment, emphasizing that their products enhance the real selves of individuals, rather than hiding them.

The production of the new video was innovative, featuring the use of an XR LED wall and Unreal Engine to recreate the backdrop from the previous episode with Chris and Ian. This time, Madwell employed five cameras to capture every nuance of the conversation, marking an agency first. This approach allowed for a more authentic and raw dialogue about reality television, friendship, and authenticity, all filmed in front of a backdrop that’s “unreal.”

e.l.f. Cosmetics’ mission is clear: all that’s real is who we really are. By bringing together cast members from a reality TV show known for its dramatic moments, the Make Up Over Makeup series showcases the power of makeup to spark real and meaningful conversations, while highlighting e.l.f. Cosmetics as a brand that celebrates individuality and self-expression.

The Emmy-nominated Vanderpump Rules will return to streaming sometime in 2024.
