Tom Holland may have just returned to theaters in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but the actor already knows how his time as Peter Parker will eventually come to an end.
During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Holland revealed that he and the filmmakers have been developing a long-term plan for his exit from the franchise since completing Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.
“There’s a whole plan that we have been working on for, I would say, since we finished Spider-Man: No Way Home,” Holland said.
While acknowledging that the strategy could evolve, the 30-year-old actor said he has a clear idea of how he would like to pass the role to Spider-Man’s next big-screen incarnation. “It’s laid out. It’s gonna change for sure, but I have a really clear vision to the passing on of the baton, and I think it’s really exciting,” he explained. “That is the thing I want to do most in this character, for sure.”
Holland became the third actor to portray Peter Parker in a live-action feature film, following Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. He made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War before leading Spider-Man: Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home and Brand New Day.
Despite considering how his run might eventually conclude, Holland has made it clear that he remains deeply connected to both the character and the filmmaking team behind the franchise.

Speaking previously on the Dish from Waitrose podcast, Holland described playing Spider-Man as a role he does not expect to tire of. “There’s something so special about Peter Parker as a character,” he said. “I think people just love him because he feels like just a regular human being. He’s so relatable.”
Holland added that returning to the franchise offers a level of familiarity that is rare in an industry where each project usually brings together an entirely new group of collaborators.
“There’s such an amazing community of people that have been on every single one of these movies, and it really does feel like a family,” he said. “It’s so lovely to have that one thing in your life which feels like a homecoming.”
Holland also took on greater creative responsibility for Brand New Day. The actor was invited into the writers’ room and worked closely with director Destin Daniel Cretton on the direction of the film and its version of Peter Parker.
According to Holland, part of that preparation involved studying online conversations about what Spider-Man fans wanted to see next. “I felt like when I was in the room with the writers, I was like the representative of the fans,” he said.
There is no indication that Holland plans to hang up the suit immediately. But when that day does arrive, he appears determined to make sure Peter Parker’s next chapter feels less like an abrupt reboot and more like a carefully planned handoff.
And considering how often Spider-Man has been recast, having an actual exit strategy may be Holland’s greatest display of responsibility yet.
