Susan Backlinie, known for her pivotal role as Chrissie Watkins, the first victim of the killer shark in Steven Spielberg’s classic thriller Jaws, has died at the age of 77. Confirming her passing, Convention All Stars owner Sean Clark stated that Backlinie suffered a heart attack at her California residence on Saturday morning.
Backlinie’s portrayal of Chrissie Watkins, whose terrifying demise sets the tone for the suspenseful narrative of Jaws, left an indelible mark on cinema history. As a skilled stunt performer, she lent authenticity to the harrowing shark attack scenes, including the film’s iconic opening sequence.
Contrary to popular belief, Backlinie’s visceral screams during the harrowing moments of the shark attack were not due to any injury from the harness. However, the genuine reaction she provided underwater was achieved without prior warning, heightening the realism of the scene.

Born on September 1, 1946, Backlinie’s career extended beyond her memorable role in Jaws. She also worked as an animal trainer before transitioning into acting and stunt work. Following her retirement from the entertainment industry, Backlinie pursued a career as a computer accountant in Ventura, California.
Her filmography includes notable appearances in Jim Henson’s The Great Muppet Caper (1981) and Spielberg’s 1941 (1979), where she notably participated in a parody scene referencing her infamous encounter with the shark in Jaws. Additionally, Backlinie made guest appearances in television series such as The Quest, Quark, and The Fall Guy, showcasing her versatility as a performer.
