‘Spider-Man 3’ will be a huge homecoming of sorts

Spider-Man
(The Spider-Men: Garfield, Holland, Maguire)

While there has been no official title or plot released by either Marvel or Sony, and production has been underway for about a month, it is looking more and more like Spider-Man 3: Home Something will introduce the Spider-Verse. Proof of this is Jamie Foxx being cast earlier as villain Electro (sans blue skin) and now Alfred Molina being confirmed to return as arch nemesis “Doc Ock.”

Now Andrew Garfield, who spent time in the Spider-suit in two films, The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has been confirmed to reprise his role and Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3) is in talks to return as the original cinematic Peter Parker.

But wait, there’s more. Collider’s Jeff Sneider reports that Kirsten Dunst will be on hand as Mary Jane Watson, and Emma Stone is “expected” to step back into the role of Gwen Stacy. However, there are rumors that Stone, whose character died in TASM 2, could return as the popular Spider-Gwen.

The still untitled Spider-Man 3 will also feature Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, along with returning cast members Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Tony Revolori and Marisa Tomei.

Is Daredevil finally coming to the MCU?

While the recent spate of Marvel TV properties like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Inhumans, The Runaways, Cloak and Dagger and The Defenders have only very loosely tied into the MCU, if rumors are true Daredevil’s Charlie Cox, whose take on the “Man without Fear” on Netflix was popular for three seasons, will make the jump to the big screen in the Spider-Man followup.

According to Murphy’s Multiverse, Charlie Cox will return as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, in Spider-Man 3. This is said to have been “set in stone for several months now,” and common sense says Matt will be Peter Parker’s lawyer as he is now a fugitive for the murder of Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal)

There is a history of Spider-Man suiting up alongside Daredevil, but whether we will see that in this version remains to be seen. It would be amazing to see Vincent D’onofrio’s Kingpin make a return as well. Either way, this remains a great way to introduce DD to the MCU. W

If so, then we can only hope Willem Dafoe is recruited to reprise his Green Goblin… with a better costume.

If I had to guess at a plot, I would bet Mysterio (who is not dead) steals something magical from Dr. Strange’s lair and opens the multiverse, releasing villains from the other films. It will then be up to the three Spider-men, Spider-Gwen and possibly a fourth, Miles Morales, to stop them.

It would be really fun to watch an older Peter Parker (Maguire) mentor Tom Holland’s Peter.
