Natalie Portman joins the conversation at AFI

Conversation will follow
special screening
of Portman’s new film
VOX LUX on
Friday, November 9

One of the highlights of attending the AFI, which kicks off November 8 at the Chinese Theater, is attending their insightful conversations. The talks provide attendees an opportunity to get to know some of their favorite filmmakers in an intimate setting. Last year, a highlight was conversations with Annette Bening and Aaron Sorkin.

This year, the AFI has announced that a “Conversation with Natalie Portman” has been added to AFI FEST 2018 presented by Audi. Honoring the actor’s career, the Conversation will take place on Friday, November 9, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, following a previously announced Special Screening of her new film, Vox Lux.

In director/writer Brady Corbet’s razor-edged second feature, Portman stars as Celeste, a jaded pop star (don’t they all get that way at some point?) who, as a teen, survived a Staten Island school shooting. Now, when Celeste’s most popular music video is the inspiration for another mass shooting, she must contend with the link between her past and present.

Portman, now an actor, writer, producer and director, received a Best Actress Academy Award for Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan (2010), as well as Oscar nominations for Jackie (2016) and Closer (2004). She made her feature directorial debut in 2015, directing, writing and starring in A Tale of Love and Darkness.

Previously Announced

The opening night gala will be the world premiere of On the Basis of Sex (directed by AFI Conservatory alumna Mimi Leder) and the Closing Night Gala will be the World Premiere of Mary Queen of Scots (directed by Josie Rourke). Visit AFI.com/AFIFEST to view the entirety of this year’s previously announced programming.

The fest will take place November 8–15, 2018, in the heart of Hollywood. Screenings, Galas and other events will be held at the TCL Chinese Theatre, the TCL Chinese 6 Theatres, the Egyptian Theatre and The Hollywood Roosevelt. Stay tuned to Reel Chicago and REEL360 as we cover this fabulous event.
