Shymalan knocks Avatar 2 out of B.O. top spot

box office

After reigning over the box office for the past 7 weeks, Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water has been knocked down to third place below the two new titles Universal’s Knock at the Cabin and Paramount’s 80 for Brady.

In M. Night Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, a 7 year old girl and her parents are vacationing at a remote cabin in the woods and are taken hostage by four armed strangers who demand they make an unthinkable choice to avert the apocalypse. Confused, scared and with limited access to the outside world, the family must decide what they believe before all is lost.

The film stars Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, Ben Aldridge, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Kristen Cui, Abby Quinn and Rupert Grint. The suspense thriller earned $14.2M in its opening weekend making it the fourth consecutive movie from Shyamalan to win first place at the box office on its opening weekend. Despite the box office numbers, neither reviewers nor moviegoers are terribly impressed with Cabin as it is rated 67% fresh by critics with an audience score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes.

80 For Brady finished a close second with $12.5M in its opening weekend. The story of this comedy revolves around four octogenarian women who are super-fans of the famous NFL quarterback Tom Brady.  The ladies, played by Jane Fonda, Sally Field, Lilly Tomlin and Rita Moreno, concoct a plan to travel to the Super Bowl to see their hero live.  Brady is timed to take advantage of the hype surrounding this year’s big game, which will take place next weekend in a faceoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. While critics scores have been lukewarm with a 64% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences seem to love it with an 90% audience score.

Once again, after holding onto the top spot for 7 weeks, Avatar: The Way of Water was knocked down to third place with a weekend gross of $10.8M, a drop of 32% from last weekend’s results and James Cameron’s blockbuster has earned $636.420,000 to date.

If you’re keeping score, each of the top three films earned over $10M, which hasn’t happened on this weekend since 2017!

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish slipped down the list from second place and finished fourth by earning an additional $8M, a drop of 24% from last weekend. Its total Domestic run is a very solid $151M.

BTS: Yet to Come in Cinemas opened in fifth place earning $5.1M. Before a two-year hiatus for required army service, BTS presents a special cinematic cut of the 2022 show in Busan, South Korea, featuring hits from across their career as well as the first concert performance of Run BTS from the album Proof. The concert film is directed by OH Yoon-Dong. The box office numbers are pretty impressive since it played at only 1,111 theaters in North America and most locations scheduled only one or two screenings per day over the weekend.

Taking the #6 spot on the top ten list, the faith-based series The Chosen: Season 3 (Fathom) earned $3.6 million during the very limited engagement. The finale of Season 3 of The series based on the life of Christ, The Chosen, was initially scheduled for a two-day release in theaters on February 2 and 3. Ticket sales were good enough for Fathom to extend the screenings through Monday, February 6, 2023.

Sony’s A Man Called Otto slid down the list from the #3 spot to #7 in its sixth week in theaters. M3GAN, Missing, and Pathaan finish off the top ten list in that order.
