Sea Moss products recalled nationwide over Botulism risk

Sea Moss

A popular sea moss supplement is being pulled from shelves nationwide due to potential botulism concerns. True Sea Moss has issued a voluntary recall of all flavors and sizes of its Sea Moss Gel Superfoods after determining that required safety procedures were not properly followed during production. The recall was reported to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which is now warning consumers not to use the affected products.

According to the FDA, gaps in manufacturing controls may have allowed conditions that support microbial growth, including Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that produces the potentially deadly botulinum toxin.

What products are affected

The recall applies to all True Sea Moss brand Sea Moss Gel Superfoods manufactured prior to January 9, 2026. The products were sold in 16-ounce glass jars, with the manufacture date printed on the lid in MM/YYYY format.

Affected flavors include, but are not limited to:

  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Wildcrafted
  • Apple & Cinnamon
  • Elderberry
  • Mango & Pineapple

A complete list of affected flavors and UPC codes is available on the FDA’s website. The products are manufactured by Diva Farm Inc., a Los Angeles–based company.

Why the recall was issued

The issue was discovered during an inspection conducted by the California Department of Public Health. Inspectors found that the manufacturer did not maintain required monitoring records for pH-controlled foods, which are especially vulnerable to microbial growth if not properly regulated.

Without adequate documentation confirming temperature and acidity controls, regulators could not verify that the products were protected against the development of toxins.

Botulism can cause symptoms including muscle weakness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and in severe cases, respiratory failure.

What consumers should do

The FDA is urging consumers to stop using the recalled products immediately. Customers with questions are advised to contact Diva Farm Inc. directly at:

Consumers should not attempt to taste or salvage the product.

Is sea moss FDA-approved?

Sea moss gel is derived from carrageenan, a substance extracted from Irish moss and commonly used as a food thickener. While carrageenan itself is approved for use as a food additive, dietary supplements do not receive FDA approval before being sold.

Despite endorsements from celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, scientific research on the health benefits of sea moss supplements remains limited.

The FDA emphasizes that “approved” food additives and over-the-counter supplements are regulated differently, and consumers should exercise caution when using any supplement product.

More information about the recall, including affected UPC codes, can be found on the FDA’s official recall notice.
