Prime Video transported attendees at its inaugural upfront presentation in New York City back to Middle-earth today, unveiling the first look at the highly anticipated second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The new season teaser trailer sets the stage for J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary villain, Sauron, as he darkens Middle-earth’s Second Age.

Following an unprecedented global success with its first season, the series will return on August 29, 2024, streaming in over 240 countries and territories.

In this season, Sauron has returned, cast out by Galadriel and now without an army or allies. The rising Dark Lord must rely on his cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, aiming to bind all Middle-earth’s peoples to his sinister will. The new season challenges even the most beloved and vulnerable characters, plunging them into a rising tide of darkness. Elves, dwarves, orcs, men, wizards, and Harfoots struggle to hold onto what matters most as friendships are strained and kingdoms fracture.

The teaser trailer offers a thrilling preview of Sauron’s rising evil presence and vengeful quest for complete power. It highlights the series’ cinematic splendor and the return of fan-favorite characters, including Galadriel, Elrond, Prince Durin IV, Arondir, and Celebrimbor, while revealing the much-anticipated creation of more Rings of Power. Watch below:

The series brings to life the heroic legends of the Second Age of Middle-earth, set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. It follows an ensemble cast as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil. From the Misty Mountains to the elf capital of Lindon, the island kingdom of Númenor, and beyond, these kingdoms and characters carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.

Season Two is produced by showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay, alongside Lindsey Weber, Callum Greene, Justin Doble, Jason Cahill, Gennifer Hutchison, and co-executive producer and director Charlotte Brändström.

Additional producers include Kate Hazell, Helen Shang, Clare Buxton, Andrew Lee, Glenise Mullins, and Matthew Penry-Davey. Directors for the new season include Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper.

All eight first season episodes are available to stream exclusively on Prime Video.
