SAG-AFTRA continues Interactive Media Agreement Talks

New York, NY – October 12, 2023: A fan cosplays as Supergirl at the 2023 New York Comic Con by Reed Pop at the Javits Center in Manhattan.

The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) recently took center stage at New York Comic Con, where members of the Interactive Media Agreement committee, along with the organization’s National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, addressed key issues and announced the continuation of negotiations surrounding the Interactive Media Agreement.

Specific dates for these negotiations will be released in due course.

During a panel discussion at the event, the focus was on the significant threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) to performers in the entertainment and media industry. The panel particularly honed in on the existential threat that generative AI presents to voice actors in video games. These professionals often find themselves vulnerable to having their voices, likenesses, and performances used without their informed consent or fair compensation.

Crabtree-Ireland, addressing both fans and industry insiders at the event, shed light on the impact of recent strikes and the influence of the public. He emphasized the power of collective action in shaping the kind of world people want to live in, one that champions authentic content and opposes the unethical use of performers’ voices and images in media.

In his address, Crabtree-Ireland stated, “We can stand up and say this is the kind of world we want to live in. This is the kind of content we want, which is authentic content that’s not made by ripping people off, whether it’s voices or images or anything else. That is within our power. All we have to do is say no and stand up and stand together.”

The organization has indicated that new negotiation dates will be communicated as soon as they are determined. The fight for the rights and fair treatment of performers in the evolving landscape of AI-driven entertainment continues.

The SAG-AFTRA strike is nearing its 100th day after talks broke off with studios on Saturday without a deal. For Reel 360 News’ full strike coverage, click here.
