Lucasfilm dropped a hyperspace-sized surprise at Star Wars Celebration 2025 in Tokyo with the announcement of an all-new theatrical release: Star Wars: Starfighter, slated to hit theaters on May 28, 2027.
Revealed on the Celebration Stage by Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy and Chief Creative Officer Dave Filoni, the film will be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Stranger Things) and will star Ryan Gosling in a lead role. Production is set to begin this fall.
Set approximately five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, Starfighter will introduce an entirely new cast of characters in a previously unexplored era of the Star Wars galaxy. Described as a standalone adventure, the film aims to expand the cinematic universe with fresh storytelling and an uncharted galactic frontier.
Gosling, coming off his Oscar and Golden Globe-nominated performance in Barbie (2024), adds another iconic franchise to his resume, which includes La La Land, Blade Runner 2049, and Drive.
During the announcement, Levy, Gosling, Kennedy, and Filoni shared the stage to enthusiastic applause, teasing fans with the promise of a film that will push the boundaries of what audiences expect from the Star Wars franchise—both narratively and emotionally.
Stay tuned for more updates as Star Wars: Starfighter enters production and prepares for launch in 2027.
