Ronda Rousey takes on Gina Carano as Netflix steps into MMA cage

One of the most anticipated women’s MMA fights in history is finally stepping into the cage. Ronda Rousey returns to MMA tonight for the first time in nearly a decade as she faces fellow pioneer Gina Carano in Netflix’s first-ever live MMA event.

Streaming live from Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, the long-discussed superfight headlines a major card produced in partnership with Most Valuable Promotions and Netflix.

The event begins tonight at 6 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. ET and will stream globally for Netflix subscribers at no additional cost.

The matchup marks the first time Rousey and Carano have ever fought, despite years of speculation and fan demand. Rousey helped elevate women’s MMA into the mainstream during her dominant UFC championship run from 2011 to 2016 before transitioning into WWE and Hollywood.

Carano, meanwhile, became one of the original breakout stars of women’s MMA before moving into acting with roles in films including Haywire, Fast & Furious 6 and the Disney+ series The Mandalorian.

“This is for all MMA fans past, present, and future,” Rousey said ahead of the event.

Carano added, “This is an honor. I believe I will walk out of this fight with the win, and I anticipate it will not come easy.”

The main event will be contested under Unified MMA Rules over five five-minute rounds at the 145-pound featherweight limit. Rousey officially weighed in at 142 pounds, while Carano came in at 141.4 pounds ahead of Friday’s ceremonial weigh-ins.

The card also includes several major names from combat sports, including Nate Diaz vs. Mike Perry and former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou returning to MMA action against Philipe Lins.

Additional fights include:

• Salahdine Parnasse vs. Kenneth Cross
• Junior Dos Santos vs. Robelis Despaigne
• Muhammad Mokaev vs. Adriano Moraes
• Jefferson Creighton vs. Jason Jackson
• Aline Pereira vs. Jade Masson-Wong

The event represents another major step in Netflix’s growing live sports ambitions following recent ventures into boxing, WWE programming and live event broadcasts.
