Marvel Television is taking Frank Castle deeper into psychological darkness than ever before with The Punisher: One Last Kill, a new Disney+ special presentation starring Jon Bernthal of The Bear.
Premiering May 12 exclusively on Disney+, the standalone special finds Castle emotionally hollowed out after years of revenge, violence, and grief. According to director Reinaldo Marcus Green, this version of Frank is operating at the lowest emotional point audiences have ever seen him.
“This is probably the darkest state that we’ve ever seen Frank Castle in,” Green explained in a behind-the-scenes interview released by Marvel.
The story centers on Frank’s search for meaning after avenging his family’s murders, only to be dragged back into violence when crime matriarch Ma Gnucci, played by Judith Light, pulls him into one final mission. Watch the trailer below:
The special was co-written by Bernthal himself alongside Green, continuing the actor’s increasingly hands-on creative stewardship over the character he first portrayed in Daredevil before headlining Netflix’s The Punisher.
Green revealed the project actually originated while Bernthal was filming Season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again. “Jon certainly lived with it a lot longer than me,” Green said. “It’s incredible that Jon has so much knowledge and brings so much depth to his character.”
One of the more interesting elements of the special is its focus on Frank’s military background and psychological trauma. Green and Bernthal worked closely with real veterans and former special operations personnel, including Marine Raiders Nick Koumalatsos and Cody Alford, as well as Green Beret Colton Hill, to shape Frank’s mental state and worldview throughout the story.
That realism appears central to the project’s tone.
Rather than functioning purely as an action showcase, One Last Kill reportedly spends significant time exploring Frank’s fractured psychology before eventually exploding into full-scale violence.
“We hold back for a long time before the action comes,” Green explained. “Once we literally set him ablaze, it’s full-on action.”
Yes. Literally set him ablaze.
The special also brings back familiar characters, including Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page and Jason R. Moore as Curtis Hoyle, grounding Frank’s emotional journey in relationships tied to his past.
Green emphasized that while the special exists within the larger MCU, it was intentionally designed to feel more self-contained and cinematic than a typical streaming episode. “I wanted to give it cinematic weight and scale,” he said. “Frank is back.”
The project also continues Marvel’s recent push toward darker, more mature street-level storytelling on Disney+, particularly through characters operating outside the traditional superhero mold.
And based on Green’s description of Bernthal setting himself on fire for the role, it sounds like nobody involved is approaching this thing halfway.
