Power of the Dog leads 94th Oscar nominations with 12

Oscar

Emmy-winning actor-comedian Leslie Jordan (Will & Grace, The Help) and Emmy-nominated actor-CEO-producer Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish, The High Note) announced the 94th Oscar nominations this morning. While Belfast, Dune (10 nominations) and West Side Story leads the pack of films, the top dog honors literally belong to the top dog, Jane Campion’s intense western, The Power of the Dog. The Netflix film scored 12 nominations.

This year’s Oscar contenders features a full slate of 10 Best Picture nominees, due to a change in the rules (for nearly a decade the Best Picture field has had a variable number of nominees between five and 10). Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story all landed Best Picture nominations this year.

According to Deadline,  Steven Spielberg the only person in history to receive 11 nominations in the Academy’s top category. The film’s other nominated producer is Kristie Macosko Krieger. The achievement puts Spielberg above Scott Rudin, who has 9, and the director’s longtime producing partner Kathleen Kennedy, who has 8.

The Academy thanked Spider-Man: No Way Home and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for saving the global box office last year by giving them one nomination each – in the Visual Effects category. When will the Academy realize that some superhero films do carry the emotional weight of other nominees?
