Shazam! Fury of the Gods hit theaters this weekend and took the top spot at the box office, earning a dismal $30.5 million in over 4000 theaters.

2023 is the year for sequels! Currently, there are six sequels in the top ten list, including last week’s #1, Scream VI, Creed III, which also opened at #1 two weeks ago, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which has been in theaters 5 weeks now, also opened in the top spot.

In Shazam! Fury of the Gods Billy/Shazam (Asher Angel/Zachary Levi) and his fellow Shazam Family members face off against the evil the Daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler. The film also stars Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou as Wizard.

The film is fairly consistent with the original and while critics aren’t being especially kind, giving it a 52% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is 88%. For the past three weeks, each new movie has taken over the top spot in their opening weekends, but hasn’t managed to hold on past that first week, and that probably won’t change next week when John Wick: Chapter 4 hits theaters and will more than likely knock Shazam Fury of the Gods out of the top spot.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was the last film to hold onto the top spot for more than one week, and this week’s #5 was only able to hold onto that top spot for two weeks in a row, before getting knocked out by Creed III, which is currently in third place in its third week in theaters.

Scream VI had an impressive opening weekend last week with a $44 million weekend, but this week the film has already dropped 61%, brought in $17.5 million and was pushed down to second place by WBD’s Fury of the Gods.

Last week’s #2, Creed III finished #3 with $15.4 million, a decline of 44% from last weekend and already amassed $127.7 million, surpassing the $116 million total domestic gross of Creed II, the previous top earner in the Creed series.

Sony’s 65 finished fourth with $5.8M, a decline of 53%. Last week 65 hit theaters and took the #3 spot, earning $12.3 million, which has earned the film a cumulative of $22.4 so far. The film follows Mills (Adam Driver) and Koa (Ariana Greenblatt) as they fight off dangerous prehistoric creatures 65 million years ago on Earth.

Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear is still bringing audiences to the theaters and is currently #6 in its fourth week. The movie is also available on premium video on demand, but audiences are still flocking to the theaters to see the carnage and hilarity. The Universal film has earned over $58 million so far.

Lionsgate’s Jesus Revolution has dropped 32% and slipped further down the list, taking the #7 spot in its fourth week in theaters, while Woody Harrelson and his Champions slip down from #6 to #8 in their second week in theaters with a 41% drop from last week.

The two holdovers from last year, Avatar: The Way of Water and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish are still holding onto the top ten list! Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is also currently streaming on Peacock. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has earned $183 million in 12 weeks, but the real champion on this list is Avatar: The Way of Water, which has earned $678 million over 14 weeks.
