Kyle Bowser, SVP of the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, emphasized the importance of dismantling negative stereotypes and harmful narratives perpetuating racial prejudices in the media. He stated, “It is incumbent upon those of us who sit in positions of authority and power within the media to work to dismantle negative stereotypes and harmful narratives that perpetuate racial prejudices – and this is where that work starts.”
This year’s enlightening panel brought together influential industry professionals and companies committed to addressing these issues. The panel featured Bowser as the moderator, Actress Yvette Nicole Brown, Actress Tiffany Cox, Ivan Juzang, Founder and President of MEE Productions Inc, and Michael Swanson, President & CEO of Faith Filmworks. The event garnered support from attendees, community leaders, and industry professionals, all recognizing the vital role accurate representation of Black individuals in media plays in shaping society.
Brown shared her perspective, saying, “This panel is important because we need accurate representation of black folks in media, and we need to teach people the best way to do that. My hope is that through this conversation, attendees can get some understanding about what we are up against, what we need to do better, and hopefully mainstream media will provide us with the lane to do exactly that.”

Tiffany Yvonne Cox added, “Taking a nice beautiful lens on the black experience and how it is seen within the media is so important. It’s imperative for us to digest information and also to break it apart and look at how the world is influenced by seeing how we are represented on screen.”
In conjunction with the panel discussion, the NAACP Hollywood Bureau launched its Media Guidelines initiative. These guidelines outline six imperatives for portraying Black lives in media. They provide a roadmap for mass media storytelling to promote a healthier, more discerning, and authentically represented society where the Black experience is understood, appreciated, and celebrated with equitable respect.
The NAACP Hollywood Bureau continues to champion diversity and representation in the entertainment industry, fostering dialogues that drive meaningful change and equity in entertainment. The conversation was a resounding success, promoting a more inclusive and equitable future for the industry and society at large.
