Morgan & Morgan’s ‘Merman’ is delightfully absurd

Legal advertising isn’t exactly known for subtlety. It’s a category dominated by stern attorneys, dramatic testimonials and endless promises to “fight for you.” Morgan & Morgan has spent the last few years gleefully ignoring all of that.

Its latest “Power Move” campaign installment, Merman, may be the firm’s funniest work yet—a perfectly absurd 60-second spot that proves memorable advertising often begins with a single ridiculous question: What if your lifeguard were actually a merman?

Directed by The Dynamic Jewo and produced by The Change Machine, the commercial opens at a neighborhood pool where the attentive lifeguard appears entirely ordinary…until he’s called into action. When a swimmer needs rescuing, he dives effortlessly into the water, revealing himself as a full-fledged merman who slices through the pool with superhero confidence before delivering his grateful swimmer safely to shore. A perfectly timed dolphin chirp seals the joke.

The payoff is classic Power Move.

“Having a merman as your lifeguard is a power move. Hiring America’s largest injury law firm after an injury? That’s a power move, too.” It’s an intentionally ridiculous metaphor—but that’s precisely why it works. Watch below:

OpenAI lets Grandma do the selling to introduce GPT-Live

Rather than selling legal services through fear, Morgan & Morgan sells memorability. The campaign has consistently paired everyday situations with hilariously overqualified solutions, from an owl conducting an interrogation to WWE superstar Liv Morgan serving as the ultimate babysitter.

The joke lands because the campaign never overexplains itself. Every frame commits completely to the bit, trusting audiences to connect the dots.

Visually, Merman punches well above typical legal advertising. Bright, saturated production design, playful performances and seamless visual effects from Zoic Studios give the commercial the polish of a streaming comedy rather than a personal injury spot. Zoic employed its Hybrid AI workflow alongside traditional finishing in Flame and Nuke, demonstrating how AI can quietly enhance craftsmanship instead of becoming the story itself.

Morgan & Morgan founder John Morgan credits the firm’s in-house creative team for continually redefining expectations in a category known for playing it safe.

Carlos Wigle, the firm’s Chief Creative Officer, described the project as one that reminded everyone involved why they got into advertising in the first place, a sentiment that’s easy to understand after watching the final spot.

The campaign also reflects a broader shift happening in legal marketing. As more firms crowd television and digital channels with interchangeable messaging, entertainment itself has become a competitive advantage. Humor creates recall. Recall builds preference. Preference generates calls.

Morgan & Morgan seems to understand that people may not remember another attorney promising results.

They’ll remember the merman.

And that’s a power move.

Morgan & Morgan has found a creative lane that’s unmistakably its own, and Merman continues proving that even one of advertising’s most formulaic categories can surprise audiences when brands are willing to embrace the wonderfully weird.
